Dustin Corn’s Take

Demetrius Pettway is Kennesaw State’s tenth signee of the 2017 recruiting class. Demetrius played his high school football at Central HS and helped lead his team to a 10-2 record and the semi-finals of the 7A AHSAA State Playoffs.  Demetrius is a versatile safety that I anticipate would spend more time in a coverage role than as a box safety.  He has the ability to line up over the slot and play man, play half the field in cover 2, or be a single high safety in cover 1/3.  Demetrius demonstrates good break on the ball, and quite a bit of range once the ball is in the air.  He possesses a good frame with plenty of room to add size over his career at Kennesaw State.

Future Impact

I see Demetrius as a versatile safety that could play either true safety position in our scheme.  I believe Demetrius as more of a deep coverage safety that has the ability to come down and play nickel corner.  His best play is in space and off of the ball, so this isn’t someone I would anticipate seeing at our “rover” or “hybrid safety/linebacker” roles.  The safety spot is in need for some depth and someone with his skill set, as we are thin at safety in 2017.  Because of the depth concerns, I could see Demetrius playing early, but he could certainly benefit from a redshirt in 2017.  While Demetrius is a sure tackler, once he adds size he will become more of a threat in run support.  I am excited to see how Demetrius performs this fall and over the course of his career at Kennesaw State.  Welcome to The Nest!
